Review on No Family Tree

Do any of you remember that project you probably had to do in grade school where you have a make a family tree? You know, you research both sides of your family and try to trace back as far as you can. This lets you learn more about your family, your culture, and yourself as well.
I read... No Family Tree by T.Katz!!!

No Family Tree

Format: Paperback
Pub. Date: December 13th, 2013
Summary:
Tessie Tremaine is mortified when her middle school English teacher, affectionately known as Mean Old Mrs. Parker, assigns a family tree project. As the daughter of parents who were both adopted, Tessie is mortified; she imagines a postage-stamp twig showing nothing but her four immediate family members. As the rest of her classmates begin to create trees filled with many family members, Tessie agonizes over the thought of exposing what her parents call their own little family island. Desperate for help, Tessie turns to her honorary grandmother, who takes her to a rose show where she learns about the art of grafting roses. Suddenly, the family tree project takes on a whole new meaning. In this poignant young adult tale, a girl struggling to find her roots soon discovers that family is much more than who she is related to by blood.
My rating: 5 out of 5 trees!
My recommendation: Anyone who likes short, cute stories!
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Tessie feels as if she has the smallest family tree possible. Her parents were both adopted so Tessie can only trace back that far. She has no way of expanding her family tree before her project is due. In her English class, the class has to research family trees, but Tessie can't do it. She doesn't want to show that she has virtually no family.
Tessie doesn't want to get humiliated at school. She envies the girl who has a giant family tree filled with people from all over the world. Tessie goes to her grandmother and soon Tessie learns the true meaning of family with the help of the art of grafting roses.
This book was really cute. It was interesting and a short read. I enjoyed it and I love how the book came with a message everyone should know. This book is perfect for younger kids, maybe for kids in middle school, especially for people who are adopted.
The book gives a lesson that family isn't just about blood. You don't have to be blood related to someone to be considered family. Your friends and people who love you are all considered to be your family. This book did a terrific job at conveying the message.
I'm not adopted so I don't know what it's like to not know who your real parents are, like with Tessie's dad, but this book made me feel connected to all the characters.
I loved this book as it was so sweet, humorous, and deep. I definitely want to read more from this author, especially if it's anything like No Family Tree.

Review on Burn Out

What would you do if you lived in a world where the sun burns you? And I'm not talking about a little sun burn. I'm talking about a burn that blisters, a burn that kills. We complain about the heat all the time, but if we lived in a world where you can't go outside, we'd certainly appreciate the 100 degree weather.
I read... Burn Out by Kristi Helvig!!!

Burn Out

Format: Hardcover/e-book
Pub. Date: April 8th, 2014
Summary:
"A scorching series opener not to be missed." - Kirkus

A futuristic blend of Beth Revis's Across the Universe and Lenore Appelhans's Level 2, Burn Out will satisfy the growing desire for science fiction with a thrilling story of survival, intrigue, and adventure.

Most people want to save the world; seventeen-year-old Tora Reynolds just wants to get the hell off of it. One of the last survivors in Earth's final years, Tora yearns to escape the wasteland her planet has become after the sun turns "red giant," but discovers her fellow survivors are even deadlier than the hostile environment.

Holed up in an underground shelter, Tora is alone--her brilliant scientist father murdered, her mother and sister burned to death. She dreams of living on a planet with oceans, plants, and animals. Unfortunately, the oceans dried out ages ago, the only plants are giant cacti with deadly spines, and her pet, Trigger, is a gun--one of the bio-energetic weapons her father created for the government before his conscience kicked in.

When family friend, Markus, arrives with mercenaries to take the weapons by force, Tora's fury turns to fear when government ships descend in an attempt to kill them all. She forges an unlikely alliance with Markus and his rag-tag group of raiders, including a smart but quiet soldier named James. Tora must quickly figure out who she can trust, as she must choose between saving herself by giving up the guns or honoring her father's request to save humanity from the most lethal weapons in existence.

My rating: 3 out of 5 heat waves!
My recommendation: Anyone who likes dystopian novels!
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Tora lives in a world where the sun escalated into a red giant much faster than anyone expected. Several people died from the extreme heat. You could either brave the heat and possibly die or you could somehow gain access to another planet, but only certain people can escape. Tora lives in an underground shelter all alone after her father was murdered and her mother and sister died. She tries to protect her arsenal of weapons, but when mercenaries come to take the weapons by force, Tora must rely on others, including Markus, to survive and she must decide if she's willing to give up her weapons.
This book sounded really good and original. There are a ton of sci-fi books out, but this is the first time for me reading about the sun becoming a red giant. I thought this book would be fun and have some awesome futuristic weapons. While the book did have these weapons which made the book awesome, the characters were not that great.
I didn't like Tora at all. It seemed like she was always whining in the book and could never keep her mouth shut. She's the only one who can control the weapons and no one else knows this. Tora then tells her enemy this and this makes her extremely invaluable. She just made stupid decisions throughout the whole book.
Tora never accepted any help from others even when it could have saved her life. She was kinda bland and so were the other characters. I felt as if there was too much romance and lust going on in the book and not enough plot or storyline.
I have so many questions about James and the others. I want to know who they're working for, why they're doing what they're doing. None of my questions were answered and it left me confused, wondering why all these characters are resorting to stealing from a teenage girl.
The book did have all the aspects of a sci-fi novel and I loved them. You got the futuristic weapons, the action, the technology, and the spaceships. The book never had a slow moment. It was action packed and I couldn't put it down.
Even though I didn't like the characters, I did enjoy the book and it was an okay read.

Vampires are the only guardians Vance has ever known since he was abandoned by his shapeshifter family as a baby quetzal, and he is grateful to them for generously providing for all of his needs. When an act of violence forces Vance from his sheltered home, he is startled to meet Malachi Obsidian, a fellow shapeshifter with conflicting ideas about Midnight and its leader, Mistress Jeshickah.

Malachi claims Vance is a bloodwitch, who Jeshickah and her trainers, Jaguar and Taro, are trying to control. Vance doesn't know anything about the rare and destructive magic Malachi says he possesses, and he can't believe Jeshickah would use it to hurt others. But when his friends begin falling ill, Vance starts to realize his perfect world may not be as flawless as it seems. So when a gunshot is fired right across the street, Tree knows this is the big story she's been waiting for. But the more she goes digging, the more secrets she uncovers, and soon she begins to wonder: When is it important to expose the truth? And when is it right to keep a secret?

Cricket Thompson's lifetime of overachieving has paid off: she's headed to Brown University in the fall, with a spot on the lacrosse team and a scholarship that covers almost everything. Who knew living in the dorm cost money? An Ivy League education seems to mean living at home for the next four years.

When Cricket is offered the chance to earn enough cash to afford a real college experience, she heads back to Nantucket for the summer. But the faraway island challenges Cricket in ways she hadn't anticipated. It's hard to focus on earning money for next year, when she finds her world opening up in entirely new ways-to art, to travel, and, most unexpectedly, to a future completely different from the one she has been working toward her whole life. A friendship blossoms with Ben, the gorgeous surfer and bartender who encourages Cricket to be free, even as she smarts at the pain of seeing Zack, her first love, falling for her worst enemy.

But one night, when Cricket finally lets herself break all her own rules, she realizes she may have ruined her carefully constructed future with one impulsive decision. Cricket must dig deep to fight for her future, discovering that success isn't just about reaching goals, but also about listening to what she's been trying to ignore-her own heart.

Subway Love

Subway Love by Nora Raleigh Baskin
What if destiny leads you to your soul mate, but the laws of time conspire to keep you apart?

If her parents had never divorced, Laura wouldn’t have to live in the shadow of Bruce, her mom’s unpredictable boyfriend. Her mom wouldn’t say things like "Be groovy," and Laura wouldn’t panic every weekend on the way to Dad’s Manhattan apartment. But when Laura spots a boy on a facing platform, lifting a camera to his face, looking right at her, Laura feels anything but afraid, and she can’t forget him. Jonas, meanwhile, thinks nonstop about the pretty hippie girl he glimpsed on the platform — trying to comprehend how she vanished, but mostly wondering whether he will see her again in a city of millions — and whether if he searches, he would have any chance of finding her. In a lyrical meditation on love, Nora Raleigh Baskin explores the soul’s ability to connect, and heal, outside the bounds of time and reason.

The A-Word (Sweet Dead Life, #2)

The A-Word by Joy Preble
WARNING- SEQUEL!
Jenna Samuels is about to turn fifteen. It's been almost a year since her stoner brother, Casey, bit the dust. Almost a year since he returned as her guardian angel, along with his "angel boss," Amber Velasco, the hot twenty-something former EMT. Almost a year since Casey and Amber used up their one-time-only angel power of flight to save Jenna from the evil Dr. Renfroe, swooping down to catch her as she tumbled off the balcony at the Houston Galleria. In short, a lot of A-word shenanigans and a mostly happy ending.

Except now Casey's begun to wonder why he's still hanging around—not that he minds protecting Jenna. She's a handful, but there's got to be a bigger picture, right? Something to distract him from his on again/off again, doomed relationship with cheerleader Lanie Phelps, who has no idea her boyfriend is, well, dead. After all, he can't use his angel wings anymore. Neither can Amber.

Enter Bo Shivers, Amber's "angel boss"—a mysterious A-word guy Jenna and Casey didn't even know existed. Whiskey-guzzling. Handsome in a grizzled way. Unpredictable. Okay, make that crazy. Bo lost his angel wings in an earthly flight a long, long, long time back—and he's been a thorn in Angel Management's side ever since. But Bo knows something is coming. Something big. Something that was worth forfeiting wings for Jenna... something that might just change everything for everyone.

But a "just fine" life gets a lot more exciting when a letter arrives from Skye Harper, aka Judith Fletcher, aka Winston’s mother. She needs help, and Nanny says the best way to give it is to take a cross-country road trip—in a "borrowed" motor home—to go find Mama once and for all. Winston’s not so sure about this plan, but with a cute stowaway named Steve along for company and an adventure on the horizon, this is sure to be a summer to remember.
