YA Books Out This Week!!!

There are more books out this week! Yay! I hope you caught up with your reading because I'm going to introduce you to some awesome books!

The Cracks in the Kingdom (The Colours of Madeleine, #2)

The Cracks in the Kingdom by Jaclyn Moriarty
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18371573-the-cracks-in-the-kingdom?ac=1
WARNING- SEQUEL!
The second in Jaclyn Moriarty's brilliant, acclaimed fantasy trilogy, THE COLORS OF MADELEINE!

Princess Ko's been bluffing about the mysterious absence of her father, desperately trying to keep the government running on her own. But if she can't get him back in a matter of weeks, the consequence may be a devastating war. So under the guise of a publicity stunt she gathers a group of teens -- each with a special ability -- from across the kingdom to crack the unsolvable case of the missing royals of Cello.

Chief among these is farm-boy heartthrob Elliot Baranski, more determined than ever to find his own father. And with the royal family trapped in the World with no memory of their former lives, Elliot's value to the Alliance is clear: He's the only one with a connection to the World, through his forbidden communications with Madeleine.

Through notes, letters, and late nights, Elliot and Madeleine must find a way to travel across worlds and bring missing loved ones home. The stakes are high, and the writing by turns hilarious and suspenseful, as only Jaclyn Moriarty can be.

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18166936-the-strange-and-beautiful-sorrows-of-ava-lavender?ac=1
Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.

Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava—in all other ways a normal girl—is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naïve to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

Review on Stones

Has anyone here dealt with alcoholism? Or had a family member/friend that suffers from alcoholism? It's a very difficult thing to talk about and even harder to write about, especially if you yourself experienced it. In Stones by Polly Johnson, Jackson explores the hardships of alcoholism and while it may tear families apart, it may make them closer as well.

Stones

Format: E-book
Pub. Date: December 9th, 2013
Summary:
Coo is trying to cope with the hand that life has dealt her. At sixteen, she feels she’s too young to have lost her older brother, Sam, to alcoholism. She’s skipping school to avoid the sympathy and questions of her friends and teachers, and shunning her parents, angry that they failed to protect her, and desperate to avoid having to face the fact that, towards the end, she began to wish Sam would leave forever – even die. Then, one day, truanting by the Brighton seafront, Coo meets Banks, a homeless alcoholic and she’s surprised to discover that it is possible for her life to get more complicated.Despite warnings from her friends and family, Coo and Banks develop an unlikely friendship. Brought together through a series of unexpected events, strange midnight feasts, a near drowning and the unravelling of secrets, together they seek their chance for redemption. That is, until Coo’s feelings start getting dangerously out of hand.
My rating: 4 out of 5 stones!
My recommendation: Anyone who wants to read a book about dealing with family that has alcoholism.
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Coo has a lot of stress in her life and she's finding it hard to care about life after her brother died. After her brother died due to alcoholism, she lost her will to carry on with her life. She wallows in her grief, never moving on, keeping the grief raw inside her. She skips school to get away from it at and on one of these outings, she meets Banks. Through Banks, Coo sees her brother, but in a better way. Banks is not like her brother when he's drunk. Even though Banks is an alcoholic with no home and hardly ever washes, Coo trusts him. She trusts him even though attacks have sprung out around town on women. The only clue is that these women smelled something odd.
But while Coo's friendship with Banks grows, they learn of the problems they both have inside. They both suffer and they both want to move on, but they're not sure how. With each other to hold onto, maybe they can find a way to let go of their grief.
I felt so sympathetic towards Coo and I can understand her anger and her grief. She just lost her brother and she wants to feel the pain, the guilt, so that she can't forget her brother even when he was mean to her. Her emotions really made this book alive. The whole book was brimming with her pain and it was interesting to see how Coo acted upon her feelings.
It was a very emotional read and these emotions stayed with me long after I read this book. It made me glad that I still have my brother and that no family of mine suffers from alcoholism. I can never fully understand Coo's pain, but this book enabled me into a glimpse of a world I'm terrified of ever entering.
I really liked the relationship between Coo and Banks. It felt real and not like it was built on lies. Coo would do anything to help Banks even when he didn't want to help himself. She would encourage him not to give up and I really felt for Coo right there. She didn't give up on Banks and this helped her realize that she herself needed to help herself to move on.
The ending was bit unhappy for my liking. I thought it would be happy and give me a satisfying conclusion, but it seemed more depressed than the beginning of the book. Nothing seemed to be resolved and it seemed to leave a bunch of things unfinished.
I really enjoyed this and the emotions it made me feel. It made me feel as if I were Coo and I hope I never have to face the problems she faced in the book.

Review on Teacher's Pet

How many of you like horror novels and movies? We all love a good scare and can't resist the thrill of a good horror book/film. What if you wanted to create your own? You could create your own book filled with horror and blood. And what if you could write with the best horror writer in the world? Yet some people take things too far and the horror that you thought was imaginary could actually be real.
I read... Teacher's Pet by Richie Tankersley Cusick!

Teacher's Pet

Format: E-book (New edition)
Pub. Date: February 11th, 2014 (New edition)
Summary:
Kate will do anything to be the teacher’s pet

An aspiring horror writer, Kate likes a little scare. When offered a spot at an exclusive weeklong writing conference, she jumps at the chance to go. After all, it’s taught by William Drewe, the master of horror himself.

But strangely, when Kate arrives, William Drewe is nowhere to be found. Filling in for him is his brother, Gideon, whose assignments give Kate the thrills she seeks. With a teacher like this, she’ll get all the material she needs to become a bestselling author . . . if she survives.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Richie Tankersley Cusick including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

My rating: 3 out of 5 books!
My recommendation: Anyone who likes a good horror book!
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Kate loves writing horror stories and when she gets the opportunity to write at a writer's conference, she's psyched. Especially when she learns she's a part of a class being taught by her favorite horror writer, William Drewe. Yet when she arrives with her teacher, Drewe is missing and no one seems to know where he is. Only Gideon, Drewe's brother, might know where he is, but even Gideon doesn't know. Or, at least, that's what he says.
Gideon replaces Drewe as the teacher of the class and Kate quickly becomes his favorite. Yet soon the conference becomes deadly as Kate begins to see things she wasn't meant to see and there's someone or something wanting to kill her.
This book was definitely creepy, especially with the hand. I love it when YA authors include the creepy factors most authors just skim over. This author didn't leave any details out and it left me feeling slightly scared when I finished the book.
It definitely had a good mystery. I never knew who was behind everything and there were tons of suspects to choose from. You never knew who the mystery person is until it was finally revealed in the end. The storyline was intriguing and I couldn't stop until I learned what had really happened to Drewe.
Kate was interesting, but I couldn't relate to her really. She claims that she doesn't like to be scared, but she sure seemed to mind when all these creepy things happened to her. Some of the characters seemed kind of blah and they didn't really have any personalities.
The ending was confusing to me. The book had seemed so simple at first, but then it got really complicated. The ending weirded me out and I had to read over it again so I could actually comprehend what had happened. It was weird and creepy. I had difficulty understanding what was going on at times and if the things Kate was seeing were real or not.
The suspense was high in the book and I couldn't put it down. While some aspects didn't seem like they could actually happen in real life, this book kept me entertained the whole time. I had to know what happened at the end and I could hardly put it down. It made me scared at times and while some things seemed cliché, I enjoyed this book and the creepy factor it brought with it.

Review on Aspen

Anyone here hate their hair? Yeah, I know, it's a weird question, especially on a book blog. But do you? Is it too straight? Is it too curly? Or do you just hate the color of it? So many women spend hours, probably days every year fixing their hair. Hair salons make a ton of money out of people who aren't satisfied with their hair. I'm one of the suckers not satisfied with my hair, but why can't we just accept who we are? It's one of the great mysteries of women!
Okay, enough talk about hair. The book I read is called... Aspen by Rebekah Crane!
(You will understand about the hair once you see the cover)

Aspen

Format: Paperback
Pub. Date: June 5th, 2014
Summary:
One quiet night in Boulder, Colorado, Aspen Yellow-Sunrise Taylor made a mistake.

In the next instant, her life changed forever.

Aspen doesn't want to remember the devastating car accident that killed Katelyn Ryan, a sleek-haired popular soccer player. But forgetting is hard-- because Katelyn may have died -- but she didn't leave. Her ghost is following Aspen around, and heading into senior year, it's kind of a problem. Especially when Katelyn's gorgeous former boyfriend Ben appears to be the only person at school with a clue as to how Aspen feels.

Popularity, college, Homecoming Court, hot guys - none of these things ever mattered to Aspen. She's been busy trying to rein in her giant mass of blonde curls, keep her stoner mother Ninny away from Toaster, her mom's awful bongo drumming boyfriend, and prevent her best friends Kim and Cass from killing - or kissing - one another. But with Ben sitting next to her in Physics looking all too gorgeous, Katelyn's spirit dogging her steps, and her obsessive snow-globe collecting therapist begging her to remember all the things she wants to forget, Aspen is thrust into a vivid, challenging world she can't control … and doesn't want to.

A darkly funny, emotionally gripping story of opening up, letting go, and moving on, ASPEN is about the best-worst accident of your life ... and what comes next.

My rating: 5 out of 5 perms!
My recommendation: Anyone in the mood for a fun book with ghosts!
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Aspen used to be a nobody at school. No one knew her name and the only way people recognized her was her crazy hair. The only thing weird about her is her mother who is a stoner with a weird boyfriend who smells and has holes in his pants where there definitely shouldn't be any holes. Yet one night, Aspen made a mistake that changed her life forever.
She was involved with a fatal car crash. She lived with only a cast and a scar as a reminder of the incident. The other driver died. She was a popular girl who was a known partier. Aspen could never replace a girl like that and it seems as if Katelyn won't let her forget it. With Katelyn's ghost haunting her, Aspen has to deal with newfound popularity as well as coming to terms with what happened that night and who Katelyn really was.
I really liked this book! It was fun and entertaining. It made me laugh out loud at some points and it was so humorous. Many books deal with heavy stuff like this book did, but unlike other authors, Crane made this book enjoyable and easy to relate to.
Crane did a fabulous job at writing in a teenager's view. Aspen was a very relatable character and Crane wasn't trying too hard to make her think like a teenager. She just let Aspen develop on her own and Crane did an amazing job. I really felt like I was in a teenager's mind in this book and as Aspen experienced things in the book, I felt like I was experiencing them along with her. I could realte with her like with her hating her hair and how she doesn't particulariy like popularity. Aspen was a smart aleck and she made some witty remarks I wish I could make in real life.
Crane made this book very believable. It wasn't paranormal really except for Katelyn's specter hanging around, but she wasn't really a ghost. Aspen's pain and guilt seemed to conjure up this figure that basically tormented Aspen until she could admit the truth. The story felt very real and as if it could happen in real life.
The other characters weren't see-through and boring. They all had their distinct personalities and their faults. The romantic interest wasn't some perfect guy with abs. He had his own imperfections and doubts which made him feel very real. Crane's detail throughout the book created very lifelike images in my mind while I read. I really liked her attention to detail and how she essentially created emotions that traveled through the characters into me until I felt like I was actually Aspen.
The story flowed beautifully and I absolutely loved it. I will definitely read it again and again. This was a fun book that hit some difficult points some authors don't dare to elaborate on. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is in the need for an awesome book!

Review on Jex Malone

Everyone has had a dream where you're a detective and you solve a case the police couldn't solve. Nancy Drew did it, why can't you? Many books have girls solving crimes while the police didn't do anything. YA authors create better detectives than those that exist! Here is a girl detective story I'm sure you'll love. It's called... Jex Malone by C.L. Gaber and V.C. Stanley!!!

Jex Malone

Format: Hardcover
Pub. Date: June 18th, 2014
Summary:
A famous case. A missing girl. If they find her, will they be heroes? Or dead?

Bored out of her mind during a summer with her police detective father in Las Vegas, Jessica (aka "Jex") Malone starts doing what she does best--snooping. When she meets three new friends who share her passion for crime, from the geek to the fashionista, suddenly, the stifling desert days don't seem so long.

Her dad is never around, just like when her parents were married. But Jex's crew, the Drew-Ids, take the pledge of eternal secrecy and then get down to the good stuff--digging through the cold-case files in Dad's home office.

One of them, the thirteen-year-old case of Patty Matthews, is still a mystery. Finding Patty, who vanished into thin air, became such an obsession for Jex's father that it destroyed the Malones' marriage. So not only is this a big deal, it's personal.

Jex is determined to find out what really happened, and her excitement is contagious. Soon her friends are all on board and so is the missing girl's brother, the hunky Cooper Matthews.

But as they dig up more and more troubling information--more than the cops ever did--they also get the clear message that someone out there wants to prevent the truth from coming out. That somebody is also prepared to do anything, absolutely anything, to prevent it.

Jex isn't afraid; after all, she's a cop's daughter. But maybe she should be.

Laced with humor, toughness, and real CSI investigation techniques, Jex Malone could be the Nancy Drew for a new generation--but with a chilling twist. These wannabe detectives are on the brink of finding out the fate of poor missing Patty. But will they disappear without a trace, too?

My rating: 4 out of 5 cases!
My recommendation: Anyone who wants to read a good girl detective story!
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Jex has lived the life of the child of divorced parents for ten years. After her mother divorced her father, Jex has lived with her mother for ten years, hardly making any contact with her real father. Yet he's making her spend the summer with him after a judge declares that Jex has to visit her father after Jex's mother ignored several warnings that Jex's father had visitation rights. So now Jex has to spend the whole summer with her father, but she does find ways to amuse herself.
Her father is a top detective, but he has a personal cold case that hasn't come close to being solved. Jex, along with her new friends, are determined to solve the case, no matter what. Yet the killer is still out there and he/she wants to stop Jex from getting too close.
I really liked how this book didn't just deal with the mystery of the cold case. Jex also had to deal with her father and her confused feelings about him. Like, how can he be a father to her when she doesn't even know him. She also has to deal with her new friends and decide if these are friends who she'll keep forever or if they're just interested in Jex because of her father.
I also liked how Jex wasn't alone. She wasn't considered crazy for wanting to solve the murder and she had friends who wanted to help. Instead of hunting after a killer alone, her friends stayed with her, even at the risk that they might disappear like Patty did. Her friends weren't background characters that didn't have any personalities.
These friends had problems of their own and I liked how the author included these issues in developing their personalities. All the girls related to Jex like how they're interested in solving the case just as much as Jex is.
The plot was fast-paced and exciting. I never got bored and it was a real page turner. I couldn't wait to read the ending and figure out the mystery. Like a good mystery book, this one kept me guessing the whole time and I when the truth was revealed, I was completely wrong! And that's a good thing!
The only thing I didn't like was how Jex appeared to be self-centered at times. I know all teens are self-centered, basically all the time, but it made me dislike her at times. She just sometimes seemed more worried about herself than others when it should've been the other way around.
This was a very intriguing book and I can't wait to read the next book about Jex and I really want to know how her relationship with Cooper progresses.

WARNING- SEQUEL!
Sequel to Pretty Crooked...

Willa Fox was told to stay out of trouble. In fact, it was an order from a very serious juvenile court judge.

However, that was before Willa found her house ransacked and a mysterious email from her mother telling Willa she had to leave Paradise Valley for a while and not to come looking for her. Willa knows her mom’s in danger and that no one at school will miss her after her recent sticky-fingered stunts with the Glitterati. So with the help of her pal Tre and with her degenerate crush Aidan as her wingman, Willa violates her probation and hits the California highway in search of her mom.

Growing up in privileged, Manhattan social circles, Caggie’s life should be perfect, and it almost was until the day that her younger sister drowned when Caggie was supposed to be watching her. Stricken by grief, Caggie pulls away from her friends and family, only to have everyone misinterpret a crucial moment when she supposedly saves a fellow classmate from suicide. Now she’s famous for something she didn’t do and everyone lauds her as a hero. But inside she still blames herself for the death of her sister and continues to pull away from everything in her life, best friend and perfect boyfriend included. Then Caggie meets Astor, the new boy at school, about whom rumours are swirling and known facts are few. In Astor she finds someone who just might understand her pain, because he has an inner pain of his own. But the more Caggie pulls away from her former life to be with Astor, the more she realises that his pain might be darker, and deeper, than anything she’s ever felt. His pain might be enough to end his life…and Caggie’s as well.
