In My Mailbox Take 21!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where I'm from (none of you will never know!) it seems like it's finally becoming spring. We almost reached 70 degree weather. That felt absolutely amazing after the freezing cold we've been experiencing for months. Now everyone can break out the short shorts and begin complaining about how hot it is. Has anyone read outside lately? It's actually been warm enough to do that! Okay, enough about the weather. Wanna know what I got this week because let me tell you, I got a ton of books?

Review on The Ghost Box

Have you ever gotten something that you were told never to open? It could've been a present before Christmas or it could be an heirloom. You've all seen the movies where the girl opens the door when you know something is hiding behind it and she's gonna die. We all think we have the common sense not to do something like that in real life, but what if curiosity wins? What if you want to open Pandora's box just to see what happens? In The Ghost Box by Catherine Fisher, Sarah opens a box that releases something that wants her help.

The Ghost Box

Format: Paperback
Pub. Date: January 1st, 2012
Summary:
A young girl must unlock the secret to a mysterious box to protect herself from an unwanted visitor. Thrilling ghost story.
My rating: 4 out of 5 boxes!
My recommendation: Anyone who wants a short, supernatural book!
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Sarah is going through a difficult time in her life. As well as being a tween, she has to deal with growing up and with her mother marrying a new man. While her new step-father is okay, his son is absolutely horrid. Matt is a Goth and is always mean to Sarah and ignores her. She doesn't believe she can live with this guy and hates this new marriage.
After going to an art exhibit, Sarah's life takes a turn to the strange. When she went to bed, she didn't expect to see a tree growing right in her room, but when she wakes up, everything has changed. She doesn't know if she's hallucinating, dreaming, or if the tree is real. But when the tree disappears and in its place is a mysterious box, Sarah knows she must open the box to solve the mystery. Sarah must realize if she should keep the box closed or if she should suffer the consequences of opening it.
This book was a fast-paced, short book. It felt like it was over the minute I started. Even though the book was short, it was still filled with action and intrigue. My attention was immediately grabbed the moment I started the book and I absolutely had to finish it. I read the book in just one sitting, and I couldn't put it down. I just had to know what happened to Sarah and Matt.
This book was entertaining and kept me interested the whole time. If I was a reluctant reader, this book would definitely make me want to read more. This book seemed very relatable. Many people have parents who have spilt up and married other people. Numerous people have had to dealt with a stepbrother or sister they didn't like. Many could relate to the feelings Sarah felt and the book also created a solution to this problem.
The author doesn't just give Sarah's side to the story, but Matt's as well. Both Sarah and Matt didn't want the marriage, but for them to solve the mystery, they had to work together to get the problem solved. This helped them realize that whether or not they chose the marriage, they'd have to deal with each other no matter what.
I enjoyed the book and it was a good break from the heavy books I've been reading. It kept me entertained the whole time and it made me want to read other books by Fisher just because I like her writing style so much.

Review on The Odd Job Squad

I'm sure all of you understand the concept of revenge. Someone did something mean or cruel to either you or a friend and you decide that since karma isn't happening fast enough, you'll create your own karma. Yeah, well, as TV shows and books have explained numerous times, it doesn't happen that way. Ever. Revenge will just bite you in the butt even if you're just trying to give someone the pain they deserve. You become the bully and karma will bite you in the butt. In The Odd Job Squad by Karl Fields is about the consequences of seeking out revenge against bullies.

The Odd Job Squad

Format: Paperback/e-book
Pub. Date: June 14th, 2011
Summary:
What reviewers are saying about The Odd Job Squad: "I haven't read a book for tweens in a long time that I enjoyed as much as The Odd Job Squad." - The Review Broads "The Odd Job Squad is one of the most fun and engaging reads that I have read this year... "- Ink Scratchers Review Blog "This is another case where the book really had me from the opening line." - Tiger Holland's All Consuming Book Reviews It was the perfect setup: an anonymous revenge club that gets even with the school's bullies, menaces and other troublemakers. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing, until someone discovers their secret. And then, everything.
My rating: 5 out of 5 protein shakes!
My recommendation: Anyone who wants to read a fun MG novel.
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Ander and his three friends were sick of how bullies treated people and how the bullies never got their just desserts. Well, they created a kind of unofficial club where if someone is being bullied, they just have to call the Odd Job Squad and the four friends will come to the rescue. While this may seem like a good idea, revenge can bite you in the butt.
Mysterious texts and messages appear for Ander, telling him to do certain things or the person will tell all the bullies Ander and his friends gave comeuppance to who exactly set up their humiliating moments. As well as dealing with this blackmailer, Ander must find tickets to a boy band, possibly find love, and has to sing in Chinese.
This book was so funny and original. It was a light, fun read that also delved into issues some middle schoolers might be facing in their age. Revenge might seem like a good idea, but this book doesn't glorify revenge. It shows the consequences of searching for just desserts and what happens if you yourself ends up becoming the bully. Instead of showing that revenge is always sweet, the author shows the dark side of revenge and how everything always comes back to haunt you, no matter how good your intentions are.
I really like the characters. The humor they had was amusing and their comments were witty. I felt as if Ander would be an amazing detective one day. He has this ability to read people and he can tell their intentions and can tell what they're going to do even if these things may seem highly unlikely. I liked reading how Ander used his "power" and how good he was at reading people. If he starts up a detective agency, he would be really good at it.
I also liked Scooter. She's a girl who isn't afraid to get in a fight with the mean girl at school. She won't hesitate to throw a punch when someone insults her. While violence is never the answer, Scooter's attitude was original and awesome.
The romance between Ander and Scooter was cute and slow. It wasn't like they suddenly fell in love. They just started to notice each other as being the opposite sex and started to become closer with the feelings between them slowly warming up. It was sweet and cute, definitely what I expected from a MG novel.
The plot was humorous and I liked how much trouble Ander and his friends got into and how they creatively came up with solutions to get out of the messes they made.
This book was very well-rounded as it had a bit of everything like mystery, romance, action, and humor. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a fast-paced MG book that will make you laugh out loud.

Review on External Forces

What would you do if being different could get you ostraisized? Could get you thrown out of your home and thrust into the wild? Could get you killed? In this world, you had to pretend that you were normal, to pretend to be like everyone else. But pretending isn't enough. Blood tests can see if you're different or not. If you're different, you're considered Deviant and are killed. Would you hide or embrace your difference? What would you do if you lived in the world of...
External Forces by Deborah Rix

External Forces (The Laws of Motion #1)

Format: Paperback/ e-book
Pub. Date: September 13th, 2013
Summary:
It’s 100 years since the Genetic Integrity Act was passed and America closed its borders to prevent genetic contamination. Now only the enemy, dysgenic Deviants, remain beyond the heavily guarded border. The Department of Evolution carefully guides the creation of each generation and deviations from the divine plan are not permitted.

When 16-year-old Jess begins to show signs of deviance she enlists in the Special Forces, with her best friend Jay, in a desperate bid to evade detection by the Devotees. Jess is good with data, not so good with a knife. So when the handsome and secretive Sergeant Matt Anderson selects her for his Black Ops squad, Jess is determined to figure out why.

As her deviance continues to change her, Jess is forced to decide who to trust with her deadly secret. Jess needs to know what’s really out there, in the Deviant wasteland over the border, if she has any hope of making it to her 17th birthday. Because if the enemy doesn’t kill her first, the Department of Evolution probably will.

My rating: 4 out of 5 Deviants!
My recommendation: Anyone who likes dystopian, sci-fi books.
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Jess has been different than everyone all her life, but this difference could get her killed. She must hide her difference before she's found out, but with the DNA tests that can find the difference, hiding in plain sight isn't very easy. So when Jess decides to join the army, she finds a way to avoid the test. But her Deviance can't stay hidden for long. Her Deviance is dangerous. It could get herself and others killed. When she's chosen for the Special Forces and must fight her feelings for Matt, Jess finds it's impossible to hide who she is.
I loved the characters in this book! I especially loved Sheree who was a beautiful girl who didn't care about her beauty. She was a gun-toting girl who was the best shooter in the Special Forces. She was strong, stubborn, and didn't take crap from anyone.
I also loved the action in this book. It was nonstop! I was dragged in right from the beginning and I couldn't stop. I loved the world building in the book and how it all made sense. While the book did have to explain some things, the explanations weren't long and boring. It was actually interesting to know how the world Jess lived in came to be.
Jess had to grow mentally to survive the Special Forces. She had to face her fears and conquer her feelings. She was strong and even when she wanted to give up, when she wanted to reveal herself, she stamped down on these feelings and continued on. Jess cared about others and didn't want them to suffer. She tried to hide her kindness by saying it was for herself, but she genuinely cared for others and I loved her relationships with all her friends.
The romance between Jess and Matt was slow, but definitely hot. The feelings between them was just simmering on the surface, just waiting to burst out. I liked how they confronted each other about their feelings and their doubts without keeping secrets that could destroy what they feel about each other.
At times this book confused me a bit, but I'm sure it would all be cleared up in the future. Like the mark Jess had. I mean, nobody ever saw it? Didn't anyone ever get suspicious about her? Some questions were left unanswered and I hope they're solved in the next book.
The only thing I didn't like about this book was how some scenes seemed very alike to Divergent. I mean, they both are different, either Deviant or Divergent. The knife throwing scene was very similar and even the romance was the same. I kept thinking throughout the whole book how the two books were so similar. But External Forces played off its world building rather well and I enjoyed it.
This book was entertaining and I can't wait for the sequel!

Review on Dani Spevak Mysteries Bundle

Who loves a good mystery? I love mystery shows like Psych where you have to figure out who the killer is and you're always super excited when your prediction is right. You hate the moments when you think ten people could have done it and you love when you've narrowed it down to one suspect. Somestimes, I predict who the killer is in the beginning and I'm right!
Now, I got a bundle of books so this is a two-for-one book review special!
I read... Codename Dancer and Pointe of No Return by Amanda Brice

Codename: Dancer

Pointe of No Return

Format: E-book
Pub. Date: April 14th, 2011 and May 12th, 2012
Summary:
Codename Dancer
Aspiring ballerina Dani Spevak is thrilled when hit TV show Teen Celebrity Dance Off comes to the campus of her performing arts boarding school. She trades the barre for the ballroom and gets set to cha-cha-cha to stardom with Hollywood wonderboy Nick Galliano.

At first their partnership is awkward, because Dani is in awe of her longtime teen idol crush. But soon their chemistry is heating up the dance floor and the attraction moves into real life.

Her excitement is short-lived, because someone wants her off the show. Bombs, poisoning, arson… Will Dani’s 15 minutes of fame be over before she reaches age 15? Dani and her friends are suddenly at the center of some serious sabotage. And if she doesn’t find out who is behind it, her next pirouette could be her last.

It’s like Nancy Drew in toe shoes in this light-hearted tween mystery, a finalist for Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart® Award for Best Young Adult Romance.

Pointe of No Return
When her nemesis Hadley mysteriously disappears, Dani is assigned to dance her role in The Nutcracker. But something doesn’t feel right, so Dani decides to investigate, even if it means she won’t get to perform. Will she find Hadley before the curtain rises?
My review: 3 out of 5 ballet shoes!
My recommendation: Anyone who likes MG books that involves ballet and mysteries.
My review:
My copy was provided by Netgalley.
Codename Dancer
Dani is a freshman at a performing arts high school and she's in love with ballet. She loves ballet so much she will risk not doing her homework and forgetting to eat for her love. When a TV show wants to do a show about dancers, Dani is thrilled for a chance to dance on live TV. Someone is sabotaging that dancers and Dani has to find out who did it before she's targeted next.
I found this book to be predictable. I could easily tell who the person is that committed the crimes. It was all suspicious and I was right. That kinda took the fun out of the mystery, but I still enjoyed the twists and turns.
At times, I found this book to be ridiculous and juvenile. This book is supposed to be a YA book, but I found it to read more like a MG novel, especially with how Dani spoke and acted. I mean, most YA books don't have whole sentences is all caps about how excited she is and such. T
he characters were a bit ridiculous too. Dani was risking her life and involving her friends when she could have just called the police or talked to a teacher. I mean, they might not have believed her, but they could've tried to help her. The police did absolutely nothing and it was up to a young girl to stop someone who could've killed Dani and others. There was really nothing special about the characters and I felt as if some of them were just there for a filler.
This book does deal with eating disorders and while it seemed to just appear all of a sudden, the author explained about them and talked about getting help for them rather well.
This book was a short, quick read that will keep you entertained even if you do get annoyed a bit with the juvenile speech.
Pointe of No Return
Dani is back with a whole new mystery to solve! Her dancer nemesis has gone missing and while it has changed Dani from being understudy to performing the lead role in The Nutcracker, Dani has to find out who kidnapped Hadley before Hadley gets hurt.
Once again, the police did nothing to help find Hadley. This issue was greater in this book than the first one because someone has actually been kidnapped. Hadley could be dead or in the hands of a creepy pervert, but the police did nothing. A fourteen year old girl had to help Hadley and it makes you doubt if the police even exist in the book. It seemed as if no one even cared that a promising dancer has suddenly disappeared. The teachers didn't care, the parents didn't care. Did no one even notice that this girl is gone? I think not.
This book was predictable like the first book and Dani continuously gets thrown into dangerous situations where she could've been killed. Does the police help? Of course not! This book is very light when the situation could have turned very dark.
It's a very lighthearted book that is perfect for a younger audience, but it wasn't very satisfying for an older reader. Dani annoyed me at times with how she acted and how stupid she could be at times, but she was set up quite a few times.
The book was a quick, fast-paced book with an easily resolved conflict that, while being cute, wasn't that mysterious.

Review on Fire & Shadow

Every town, every country, every culture has different legends. They could be perceived as myths from an ancient times or there are people who believe in these myths. Every story may seem different, but they are all close. There are legends about vampires in many different cultures, all very different, but still the same. Does that mean creatures like vampires actually exist? The world may never know!
After that spiel, I have a new book for review that involves Indian myths and legends. The book I read was... Fire & Shadow by T.G. Ayers

Fire & Shadow (Hand of Kali, #1)

Format: Paperback/ e-book
Pub. Date: July 23rd, 2013
Summary:
Normal people sneak out to a party and have fun. Maya Rao ends the evening by incinerating the guy who attacks her.

Nik Lucas, sexy, new in town and totally forbidden, happens to walk in on her. Normal guys would run for the hills. Nik knows a whole lot more than he's telling.

Maya doesn't believe the gods are real, doesn't waste her time with mere mythology. But when gods, demons and hellhounds become the new normal and wielding fire becomes her new skill, she must decide what it is she really believes.

Can Maya accept that normal is something she will never be because it isn't normal to be ...

The Hand of Kali.

A new Paranormal coming of age series delving in the fantasy and magic of Hindu mythology and its plethora of gods, demons, legends & mythology.

My rating: 3 out of 5 flames!
My recommendation: Anyone who is interested in Indian myths!
My review:
My copy was provided to me by Netgalley.
Maya is an Indian-American teenager living a regular life in high school. She doesn't believe in gods and goddesses and doesn't buy anything supernatural. The world, to her, is strictly black and white where there's no such thing as magic. Well, her view of the world changes drastically when she shoots fire out of her palm and turns a guy into ash. The good news is that the guy is a demon. The bad news is that demons are after Maya.
It turns out all the myths and legends are actually true! Maya is a reincarnation of a follower of a goddess. Yep, this is where the book veers off course of regular reincarnation books. Instead of being a goddess, Maya is a follower of a goddess, the Hand of Kali. She has to stop the demons from killing her and possessing her friends and family before it's too late.
I really liked the mythology in this book. I'm always interested in learning about myths and magic and this book definitely had a lot of it. Maybe a little too much. There were so many different characters that are briefly mentioned but are all important in the book that I lost track of them all. This book was a bit slow at times when it had to explain all about the myths and while it was interesting, it got boring after a while.
I also didn't like how stubborn Maya is. I know she's a teenager and all teens are stubborn, but she absolutely refused to believe in magic, especially when she shot fire out of her hands! She went face-to-face with several deities and still doubted their existence. As well as making some stupid decisions, I didn't really like Maya. I did like how she would do anything for her friends, even if it meant her death. Maya was a strong, independent character that wanted to help everyone.
The romance didn't really click for me. I mean, Nik is the new guy at school who's all mysterious and staring at Maya all the time, but what does he like about her? It felt too much like insta-love where there's no real feelings or connection to back up the romance they felt. It's like they were forced together and I felt no heat, no passion between them.
I would definitely read the next book because I have so many questions left unanswered. This book was ripe with mythology that will leave you craving for more.

Maybe a sore arm. We definitely didn't expect to get telepathic powers. But suddenly we could hear what everyone was thinking. Our friends. Our parents. Our crushes. Now we all know that Tess is in love with her best friend, Teddy. That Mackenzie cheated on Cooper. That, um, Nurse Carmichael used to be a stripper.

Since we've kept our freakish skill a secret, we can sit next to the class brainiac and ace our tests. We can dump our boyfriends right before they dump us. We know what our friends really think of our jeans, our breath, our new bangs. We always know what's coming. Some of us will thrive. Some of us will crack. None of us will ever be the same.

Promise of Shadows

Promise of Shadows by Justina Ireland
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17869212-promise-of-shadows?ac=1
Zephyr Mourning has never been very good at being a Harpy. She’d rather watch reality TV than learn forty-seven ways to kill a man, and she pretty much sucks at wielding magic. Zephyr was ready for a future pretending to be a normal human instead of a half-god assassin. But all that changes when her sister is murdered—and she uses a forbidden dark power to save herself from the same fate.

Zephyr is on the run from a punishment worse than death when an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend (a surprisingly HOT friend) changes everything. A young soprano enrolls in a remote music academy where nothing, not even her mysterious young vocal coach, is as it seems

Outside Dunhammond Conservatory, there lies a dark forest. And in the forest, they say, lives a great beast called the Felix. But Sing da Navelli never put much faith in the rumors and myths surrounding the school; music flows in her blood, and she is there to sing for real. This prestigious academy will finally give her the chance to prove her worth—not as the daughter of world-renowned musicians—but as an artist and leading lady in her own right.

Yet despite her best efforts, there seems to be something missing from her voice. Her doubts about her own talent are underscored by the fact that she is cast as the understudy in the school's production of her favorite opera, Angelique. Angelique was written at Dunhammond, and the legend says that the composer was inspired by forest surrounding the school, a place steeped in history, magic, and danger. But was it all a figment of his imagination, or are the fantastic figures in the opera more than imaginary?

Sing must work with the mysterious Apprentice Nathan Daysmoor as her vocal coach, who is both her harshest critic and staunchest advocate. But Nathan has secrets of his own, secrets that are entwined with the myths and legends surrounding Dunhammond, and the great creature they say lives there.

Lyrical, gothic, and magical, Strange Sweet Song by Adi Rule will captivate and enchant readers.
