When I Was the Greatest
When I Was the Greatest by Jason Reynolds
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17428880-when-i-was-the-greatest?ac=1
In Bed Stuy, New York, a small misunderstanding can escalate into having a price on your head—even if you’re totally clean. This gritty, triumphant debut captures the heart and the hardship of life for an urban teen.

A lot of the stuff that gives my neighborhood a bad name, I don’t really mess with. The guns and drugs and all that, not really my thing.

Nah, not his thing. Ali’s got enough going on, between school and boxing and helping out at home. His best friend Noodles, though. Now there’s a dude looking for trouble—and, somehow, it’s always Ali around to pick up the pieces. But, hey, a guy’s gotta look out for his boys, right? Besides, it’s all small potatoes; it’s not like anyone’s getting hurt.

And then there’s Needles. Needles is Noodles’s brother. He’s got a syndrome, and gets these ticks and blurts out the wildest, craziest things. It’s cool, though: everyone on their street knows he doesn’t mean anything by it.

Yeah, it’s cool…until Ali and Noodles and Needles find themselves somewhere they never expected to be…somewhere they never should've been—where the people aren't so friendly, and even less forgiving.

The True Adventures of Nicolo Zen
The True Adventures of Nicolo Zen by Nicholas Christopher
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17797266-the-true-adventures-of-nicolo-zen?ac=1
This richly-detailed historical novel from master storyteller Nicholas Christopher features an unforgettable hero: Nicolo Zen is all alone in 1700s Venice, save for his clarinet, which a mysterious magician had enchanted, allowing its first player to perform expertly. Soon Nicolo is a famous virtuoso, wealthy beyond his dreams, but he can't stop wondering if he earned the success himself -- or what might happen if the spell were removed. And throughout it all, he continues to think about the girl he met in Venice, what she might be doing and if she's safe from harm.

With a guest appearance by composer Vivaldi, and brimming with fascinating period details, this is a compelling coming-of-age story full of universal themes and a love story that will conjure memories of Romeo and Juliet, perfect for teens who love stories set in other times, but without a paranormal storyline (as long as you don't count a magician who dresses all in white and can be in two places on once . . . ).

A beautifully written, darkly funny coming-of-age story from an award-winning, bestselling German author making his American debut.

Andre Tschichatschow, aka Tschick (not even the teachers can pronounce his name), is new in school, and a whole different kind of unpopular. He always looks like he's just been in a fight, his clothes are tragic, and he never talks to anyone.

But one day Tschick shows up at Mike's house out of the blue. Turns out he wasn't invited to Tatiana's party either, and he's ready to do something about it. Forget the popular kids: Together, Mike and Tschick are heading out on a road trip. No parents, no map, no destination. Will they get hopelessly lost in the middle of nowhere? Probably. Will they meet crazy people and get into serious trouble? Definitely. But will they ever be called boring again?

Not a chance.

Review on The Shadow Prince

I have a new review for ya'll! This book was recently featured on my Waiting on Wednesday and I am so glad I did! I absolutely loved this book and I can't wait for it to come out so I can buy it.
Without further ado, I present to you...
The Shadow Prince by Bree Despain!!!

Into the Dark Book #1: The Shadow Prince

Format: Hardcover/ e-book
Pub. Date: March 11th, 2014
Summary:
Haden Lord, the disgraced prince of the Underrealm, has been sent to the mortal world to entice a girl into returning with him to the land of the dead. Posing as a student at Olympus Hills High—a haven for children of the rich and famous—Haden must single out the one girl rumored to be able to restore immortality to his race.

Daphne Raines has dreams much bigger than her tiny southern Utah town, so when her rock star dad suddenly reappears, offering her full tuition to Olympus Hills High’s prestigious music program, she sees an opportunity to catch the break she needs to make it as a singer. But upon moving into her estranged father’s mansion in California, and attending her glamorous new school, Daphne soon realizes she isn’t the only student in Olympus who doesn’t quite belong.

Haden and Daphne—destined for each other—know nothing of the true stakes their fated courtship entails. As war between the gods brews, the teenagers’ lives collide. But Daphne won’t be wooed easily and when it seems their prophesied link could happen, Haden realizes something he never intended—he’s fallen in love. Now to save themselves, Haden and Daphne must rewrite their destinies. But as their destinies change, so do the fates of both their worlds.

My rating: 5 out of 5 hell cats!
My recommendation: Anyone who wants to read a book with a new twist on mythology or anyone who likes a book that involves music.
My review:
My copy was provided to me by Netgalley.
I loved this book! I loved the mythology and the music and especially Haden! I was practically going in blind on the mythology of this book. In my school, we barely touched on Greek mythology and never covered the myth of Orpheus. The only reason I knew anything about him was reading about it in Everneath by Brodi Ashton. This book elaborated much more on Orpheus's tale and included so much more myths.
We all know the story of Persephone and Hades, right? Most people think Persephone was kidnapped by Hades and was tricked to eat six seeds. Well, what if she wanted to go with Hades? What if she fell in love with him and wanted freedom from her destiny? This book makes you question everything you know about Greek mythology.
Haden is the son of the Underworld ruler, but this ruler is not Hades considering Hades is dead. Haden has always been too human, too emotional to be a great Dark Lord and his father has always resented him for it. Haden just wants to be respected by his father, to be accepted as a Dark Lord. But it isn't that easy. To be accepted, Haden was chosen as Champion and had to bring a Boon back to the Underworld. This has been accomplished multiple times by other Champions, but Haden's Boon was a bit different. His Boon is the Cypher, a term he had never heard before. Haden had to go to the mortal realm, convince the Cypher, Daphne Raines, to trust him, and take her back to the Underworld. Simple, right? No, it gets so very complicated.
Daphne is an amazing singer. As well as having an amazing singing voice and being able to play the guitar, she is able to sense the songs in everything, in everything that has life. She wanted more than her small town life, in a town she has never left. She wanted to become famous, to sing where everyone could hear her, just like her father did, the famous singer, who left Daphne and her mother for a life of fame.
I loved Haden! He came into the human world without knowing everything about the gagets or technology. It was pretty funny how Despain explained what Haden thought about iPhones and music. Haden had no idea how to date or make a girl fall in love with him. He thought he had to be mean to get Daphne to like him. He was so funny and sweet. Haden blushes and cries, the opposite of what a Dark Lord should be like.
Daphne was down-to-earth and didn't care about fame or money like her dad did. All she cared about was her music. She doesn't fall in love with Haden at first. Most of the time, she thought he was either a pervert or he was just plain crazy. There's no insta-love here, which was very refreshing. In fact, there was only one kiss, but man did that kiss contain a ton of passion!
This book was all about the romance with a little bit of plot on the side. No, the plot was so important and complicated, but it didn't confuse me. The myths made sense to me and I loved how everything tied together. The book is a long read, but it didn't feel wrong. It was a fast-paced book filled with action and suspense. I couldn't put it down until I was done. This book was written well and the bits about the Underworld weren't just plopped down and you had to sort through the whole mess. They were laid out quite simply and made the whole book both easy to understand and interesting.
The mythology was amazing in this book! It makes me want to find out more which every book should do.
The ending of this book was packed with suspense and revelations. It wasn't too much of a cliffhanger that made you want to throw the book across the room. It left you with tidbits that makes you want to read the next book to figure out how everything's gonna end.
This book was packed with action and it was so interesting. You should definitely read this book, especially if you want to know more about Greek mythology.

Something comes back with Callie--in Callie--something she cannot escape. Can Callie control her power long enough to send back the darkness before it takes over her life? Will Josh ever understand her secret? A brilliant, engrossing young peoples fantasy from the author of Winterbringers and The Keepers Daughter. (Ages 11-13).
My rating: 3 out of 5 spells!
My recommendation: Anyone who likes modern day witches and Scotland, you'll enjoy this book.
My review:
My copy was provided to me by Netgalley.
The plot of this story was pretty interesting. Callie doesn't have many friends at school and she has always known she was different. But when she's told that she's a witch, her whole life changes. Callie must learn how to control her powers as well as try to get her mother to accept her. But that's not all. Josh, Callie's friend, has come to visit and he's unknowingly sucked into the witch world. A ghost of a powerful witch has attached itself to Callie and it's determined to take over Callie and her whole family. She must control her powers and send the ghost back to where it came from before everything she knows is lost.
The plot kept me interested most of the time, but it seemed rushed. There are books that span over a week and there are books that take a whole year. This book is a mixture of the two. Sometimes, a day has passed and other times, a month has passed. There were also some slow moments that bored me.
Also, some of the multiple POVs were strange. I remember Callie's cat had a POV part in the book and that was kinda weird, especially since it only happened once for about a page.
If you're looking for a book with romance, there's nada here. You would think Callie and Josh would be a couple, but they're just friends. Callie refuses to get help with the ghost even though she knows she's in danger. Josh told her multiple times to get help from the older witches and she's always putting it off. It got annoying. I mean, your life is in danger and you don't do anything about it!
Josh seemed shallow to me. He hides his true self, the side of him that Callie enjoys, at school and acts like every shallow, annoying guy. He just wanted to belong even though he wasn't actually himself while "belonging".
The beginning was slow, but during the middle, it picks up to the point that I could hardly put it down. What I really enjoyed with this book was the detail in the ending, how Callie worked together with everyone to solve the problem, and the friendship between Callie and Josh. No matter what, they stuck together like peanut butter and jelly. Instead of calling her a freak for being a witch, Josh supported Callie. They help each other no matter what.
Overall, this book was okay. It was interesting in the end, but it didn't stick with me after I finished it. The book is a quick, short book filled with witches galore and undying friendship.

Review on Thunderstone

I'm baaaaack everyone! I have another review for ya'll and I hope you'll enjoy this. This book was definitely not like any book I've read before. It's original and if you haven't already read it, read it!
This book is called...
Thunderstone by Barbara Pietron

Thunderstone

Format: Paperback
Pub. Date: November 12th, 2013
Summary:
Sneaking out at night, driving without a license, and falling for a guy weren’t things fifteen-year-old Jeni expected to do while visiting Lake Itasca, Minnesota with her family. The guy, Ice, turns out to be the local medicine man’s apprentice, and when he tells Jeni she’s connected to the spirit world, her first instinct is to run. But after Ice’s stories of a mythical underwater monster—that Jeni allegedly released—prove true, she realizes it’s up to her to contain the beast. Jeni must first convince herself that she’s able, and then save the locals, Ice, and ultimately herself.
My rating: 5 out of 5 dream stones!
My recommendation: People who want an original story, especially one that involves Native American Indian mythology.
My review:
My copy was provided to me by Netgalley.
Jeni just thought she was going on a trip with her family, including her annoying cousin, to scatter the ashes of her grandfather in Lake Itasca. When she stopped at a gas station with her cousin, she just wanted to get a souvenir of her trip. She didn't think anything of the statue of a cat with scales except that it looked unusual. But that's when she met Shattered Ice aka Ice and everything went both wrong and right. Now Jeni must try to help Ice and Nik to seal a water beast, an underwater Manitou. She must learn the legends, she must learn how to control her powers, all while trying to be there for her family. Jeni has help, however, with Ice and her cousin, Tyler, who might not be as annoying as she thought.
The good:
I loved the mythology in this book! Many YA books involve Greek mythology and it's becoming more common. But the folk lore in this book was entirely different! Thunderstone is based on Native American mythology, myths that are still believed today. What I liked so much about this mythology is how it's still told of today. The Native Americans still have medicine men and they are still practicing magic. So many cultures have abandoned their myths for their version of reality, but Native Americans still believe.
The book tells a few tales of mythology, but doesn't totally overload you with information that you won't remember.
Jeni is a likable main character who, while falling in love with Ice and going on dangerous missions, doesn't forget about her family. She wants to protect the innocents who died from the underwater beast while some actual people would just think, "not my problem,". She doesn't fall instantly in love with Ice. She gradually gets to know him, she fights with him, and she doubts him instead of other girls in different books who think the guy is absolutely perfect.
Ice is like an actual teen guy. I loved when the point of view switched to him. He had hormones and he had his own problems. I loved him and I loved Tyler!
This book isn't all about the romance. The main point of this book stays the main point without getting sidetracked by romance. Jeni has to trust Ice and herself to stop the monster from killing anymore lives. She must discover her heritage and embrace her powers to save innocents. This book had a lot if action and was unpredictable at times. There was also humor in this book with Tyler, who I absolutely loved.
Pietron included such detail, especially on the beast itself. When Jeni saw the beast for the first time, the descriptions made my skin crawl. If I saw the beast in real life, I would've run away as fast as I could. It was so vivid and amazing.
The ending was amazing and wrapped up quite nicely, but I definitely wouldn't mind a sequel.
The bad:
I couldn't find anything bad about this book! It was awesome! It did seem a bit too coincidental when Jeni fell in the water with the statue in her pocket. But it also made sense so I didn't mind.
I can't wait for the sequel and I will definitely buy it!

Now to save themselves, Haden and Daphne must rewrite their destinies. But as their destinies change, so do the fates of both their worlds.

Don't these covers look amazing? They have a Divergent look to them, don't you think? And the synopsis. Wow. It sounds so good! It's a brand new version of Persephone and Hades with a special twist.
I'm thankful that I got this book early from Netgalley. I can't wait to read it and I will definitely buy it when it officially comes out.
What do you think of this book? Good? Bad? Tell me, I've got nothing else to do!
