Review on Nightmare in Niceville

Hola people! How's your week going? I'm having a pretty decent week. It's boring, but sometimes that's good. Any good books anyone's read? I read one, but it was not my cup of tea. But I have a review so here it is!

Nightmare in Niceville by Amberle Cianne

Nightmare in Niceville
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12935814-nightmare-in-niceville?ac=1
Format: Paperback/e-book
Pub. Date: October 12th, 2011
Summary:
Lily Strykes is a typical teenage girl, who, along with her mother and younger sister, settles into a comfortably predictable lifestyle in the quiet little town of Niceville, Florida. But hidden in their past is something dark. A fun night out with friends takes an unexpected and terrifying turn as her previous life quickly catches up to her. Lily's routine but peaceful existence, as well as those of her family and friends, is turned upside down in a matter of hours when a figure from her violent past suddenly returns.
My rating: 2 out of 10 knives!
My recommendation: People who like cheesy horror movies should read this.
My review:
My copy was provided to me by Netgalley.
This book was like a cheesy horror movie to me. It read like a movie to me and it was very predictable. Lily moved to Niceville after some problems in her past and she's accepted that Niceville is her life. Niceville seemed stupid to me. Like it's name, everyone is all nice and no city is like that. People scream and yell, people get arrested for stupid things. No city is perfect, but apparently Niceville is.
The boring was boring to me. Lily is living her normal life and the guy she's had a crush on for years might actually be interested in her. In the beginning, the book had paragraph long descriptions on characters that barely appeared in the book. I couldn't keep track of all the names. Especiailly during the end when the point of view kept changing. Some chracters barely showed up and were flat, making it hard to remember them even when they show up later in the book.
This book was very predictable. The cover kind of gives away what happens in the book. It was cliché and artificial.
I did like the cover and how it kind of reminded me of And Then There Were None. That was what I first thought the book was going to be like. I also liked how the book gave a point of view to The Man. It was interesting to know his thoughts and how his past affected him and why he wants to hunt Lily down.
This book was alright to me. It wasn't horrible. It was just too predictable for me. But if horror movies are your thing, read this book!

Review on Runes

I have another review coming your way so sit back and relax as I tell you all about this book and why I think it's amazing!
And this amazing book is... Runes by Ednah Walters

Runes (Runes, #1) Runes (Runes, #1)

Format: Paperback/kindle book
Pub. Date: May 20th, 2013
Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only are she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

My rating: 4 out of 5 runes!
My review:
My copy was provided to me by Netgalley.
The good:
I loved the mythology of this book, the characters, and the plot! The Norse mythology really enthralled me and I wanted to learn more. I'm sure the sequel (I hope there is one soon) will include a ton more of this mythology.
Next, the characters. Raine, the main character, didn't strike me as much of an interesting character. Her emotions were always all over the place and at times, she annoyed me. But I loved Cora and Torin! Cora is an amazing friend who is a vlogger and guy-obsessed, but this book made sure to include her issues and her feelings as well. She isn't just a sidekick whose problems are never expressed. She felt real to me and I wish I had a friend like her.
Now Torin. Basically, all I need to say is that I loved him. It didn't help that he's HOT, at least, that's what the book made me think. His multiple shirtless scenes almost made me drool as much as Raine. He isn't just the hot guy though. He cares about what Raine thinks and doesn't care what anyone thinks about him.
He rides a Harley, makes a big appearance wherever he goes, and he's so sexy. He's a snarky bad-boy with a heart. He wants to protect Raine and her family, no matter the consequences. Though maybe he should have listened to his head more because the repercussions of his actions were immense.
Torin can act like a jerk at times, but he's just trying to protect Raine, even if he can't help himself at times.
The bad:
I did not like how Raine kind of just stringed Eirik along. She finally got her best friend for years to be her boyfriend and she should've been ecstatic. But no. Even though she had got what she had always wanted when she had been in love with Eirik for years without expressing it, she fell for Torin.
I know she couldn't help who she fell in love with, but she should have talked to Eirik about her feelings. She should've broken up with him from the start. Yet she kept getting jealous of Torin and using Eirik to try to make Torin jealous. She got mad at Torin for kissing another girl so she kisses a guy in front of him. Not cool. She needed to get her feelings in check and should've stopped stringing Eirik along the moment Torin came into the picture. Love triangles, I dislike you.
The ending also annoyed me. It seemed as if it went way too fast for me and it took a bit for it to sink in. And that cliffhanger. It made me want to scream. I can't wait to read the second book; I want it so much!
If the hot guy isn't enough for you, the plot and mythology make this book amazing. I will definitely be reading the sequel and I hope there's even more Torin!

YA Books That Come Out This Week

This is a new thing I was working on before I went offline, and I'd like to get it started. Without further ado, here is the list of all YA books that come out this week!
Note: Some books might not be listed here. I'm not all-knowing, sadly.

Vermilion: Alexandra and Robinson First Love

First Love by James Patterson and Emily Raymond!
WARNING: THIS IS AN ADULT BOOK. I included it because it involves teenagers and I love James Patterson's books.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17899371-first-love
Axi Moore is a "good girl": She studies hard, stays out of the spotlight, and doesn't tell anyone that what she really wants is to run away from it all. The only person she can tell is her best friend, Robinson--who she also happens to be madly in love with.

When Axi impulsively invites Robinson to come with her on an unplanned cross-country road trip, she breaks the rules for the first time in her life. But the adventure quickly turns from carefree to out-of-control...

A remarkably moving tale with its origins in James Patterson's own past, First Love is testament to the power of first love--and how it can change the rest of your life.

The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant (V, #1)

The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanna Wiebe
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17675434-the-unseemly-education-of-anne-merchant?ac=1
So many secrets for such a small island. From the moment Anne Merchant arrives at Cania Christy, a boarding school for the world’s wealthiest teens, the hushed truths of this strange, unfamiliar land begin calling to her—sometimes as lulling drumbeats in the night, sometimes as piercing shrieks.

One by one, unanswered questions rise. No one will tell her why a line is painted across the island or why she is forbidden to cross it. Her every move—even her performance at the school dance—is graded as part of a competition to become valedictorian, a title that brings rewards no one will talk about. And Anne discovers that the parents of her peers surrender million-dollar possessions to enroll their kids in Cania Christy, leaving her to wonder what her lowly funeral director father could have paid to get her in… and why.

As a beautiful senior struggles to help Anne make sense of this cloak-and-dagger world without breaking the rules that bind him, she must summon the courage to face the impossible truth—and change it—before she and everyone she loves is destroyed by it.

Going Rogue (Also Known As, #2)

Going Rogue by Robin Benway
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17934520-going-rogue?ac=1
WARNING: SEQUEL!
Being permanently based in a local New York City high school as an undercover operative has its moments, good and bad, for 16-year-old safecracker Maggie Silver. Pros: More quality time with her former mark-turned-boyfriend Jesse Oliver and insanely cool best friend, Roux. Getting to spend quality time with her semi-retired and international spy honorary uncle, Angelo. Cons: High school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations. But when Maggie's parents are falsely accused of stealing priceless gold coins, Maggie uses her safecracking skills to try and clear their names. Too bad it only serves to put her and everyone she loves in danger. Maggie and her "new team" flee to Paris where they must come up with a plan to defeat their former allies.

So, what do you want to read that comes out this week? I want to read Vitro and The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant.

Review on Will o' the Wisp

Hello everyone! I'm back once again with another review. If graphic novels aren't your cup of tea, this book might not be something you'd want to read.
Here it is... Will o' the Wisp by Tom Hammock and Megan Hutchinson

Will O' the Wisp
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18125353-will-o-the-wisp?ac=1
This book is a nominee for the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens 2014
Format: Hardcover
Pub. Date: January 28th, 2014
Summary:
After her parents' accidental death by mushroom poisoning, young Aurora Grimeon is sent to live with her estranged grandfather on Ossuary Isle, deep in the southern swamps. Joined by her grandfather's pet raccoon Missy, Aurora explores the fog-covered island of graves. Along the way she meets its sinister residents who care for the tombstones and mausoleums, living out their lives by the strange rules of Hoodoo magic. When ghostly things start happening out in the swamp and island residents start disappearing, Aurora thrusts herself into the middle of the mystery, uncovering secrets that might be better left buried.
My rating: 3 out of 4 will o' the wisps!
My review:
My copy was given to me by Netgalley.
The good:
The premise of this book sounded very interesting to me. How many books involve an orphan whose parents died from eating poisonous mushrooms? Yeah, not many. Also, the sidekick. I freaking loved Missy the raccoon. If I didn't know raccoons would probably chew my face off in reality, I would want one as a pet!
I also enjoyed the relationship between Aurora and her grandfather. At first, her grandfather was rather gruff with her, probably because he wasn't used to being around kids. But he slowly began to like Aurora and they became close. I thought how their relationship progressed was necessary for this novel.
The bad:
While this novel was definitely original with its will o' the wisps, its ghosts and spirits, and the raccoon, I didn't like how the book seemed to skip around, almost as if it was missing a page or two or a few panels. The story jumped around almost, making it confusing to me.
The artwork was kinda dreary and dark. I know this book is supposed to be a dark fantasy set in a swamp that is supposed to be creepy, but there was no contrast. There weren't any light scenes or happy scenes. To make a book work, there needs to be an equal amount of each. At least, that's what I think.
The characters weren't too striking for me and this book was just confusing to me.
This book was interesting with its supernatural plot and the gothic-ness of the novel, but it just skipped around a bit. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a gothic, paranormal graphic novel with a raccoon sidekick.

In My Mailbox Take 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mermaid in Chelsea Creek

Mermaid in Chelsea Creek by Michelle Tea and Jason Polan
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16129217-mermaid-in-chelsea-creek
Everyone in the broken-down town of Chelsea, Massachussetts, has a story too worn to repeat—from the girls who play the pass-out game just to feel like they're somewhere else, to the packs of aimless teenage boys, to the old women from far away who left everything behind. But there’s one story they all still tell: the oldest and saddest but most hopeful story, the one about the girl who will be able to take their twisted world and straighten it out. The girl who will bring the magic.

Could Sophie Swankowski be that girl? With her tangled hair and grubby clothes, her weird habits and her visions of a filthy, swearing mermaid who comes to her when she’s unconscious, Sophie could be the one to uncover the power flowing beneath Chelsea’s potholed streets and sludge-filled rivers, and the one to fight the evil that flows there, too. Sophie might discover her destiny, and maybe even in time to save them all.

Sure, he's free, as black people have been since his grandfather's day, but in rural Georgia, that means they're free to be whipped, abused, even killed. Almost four years later, Cy yearns for that freedom, such as it was. Now he's a chain gang laborer, forced to do backbreaking work, penned in and shackled like an animal, brutalized, beaten, and humiliated by the boss of the camp and his hired overseers. For Cy and the boys he's chained to, there's no way out, no way back.
And then hope begins to grow in him, along with strength and courage he didn't know he had. Cy is sure that a chance at freedom is worth any risk, any sacrifice. This powerful, moving story opens a window on a painful chapter in the history of race relations.

Review on Drawn!!!!

Hey, I'd told you all that I'd be back! And here I am! I have a review on a book I'm sure you will enjoy! This book combines super powers, comics, and romance into an amazing book!

This book is called...Drawn by Cecily Gray.

Drawn

Format: Paperback/e-book

Pub. Date: December 15th, 2013

Summary:

A wholly original tale of friendship and betrayal through the eyes – and lies – of one extraordinary girl.

Sasha has a secret – that she can make you spill your secret with nothing more than a question. Her strange gift makes her a burden to her foster family and a total freak of nature. Not that Sasha cares. Why should she when no one cares about her?

Then the CIA knocks on her door. They want to give Sasha a new identity and drop her into a foreign country to infiltrate a ring of zealous graffiti terrorists. They want to give Sasha something to care about.

To survive a world where no one is who they seem, Sasha needs to make people trust her. But when that trust blossoms into love, Sasha is forced to decide between duty and friendship, between her mind and her heart, and whether to tell the truth or keep her secrets.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17725214-drawn?ac=1

My rating: 4 out of 5 Lassos of Truth!

My review:

My copy was provided to me by Netgalley.

Who has ever wanted to be able to get someone to tell you a secret? Whether a family member or someone talking behind your back, you always want to find out what is really on someone's mind. Well, Sasha has this power, but it's not all fun and games. Whenever she gets someone to tell the truth, who knows what will come out? It can either be helpful or it can be harmful, but Sasha has no way to control it unless she doesn't make a sound for the rest of her life.

I felt so bad for Sasha! She was sent from foster home to foster home, always sent back because of her ability. And then she was tested on by a lab, tested to see where she got her ability. She had never had a friend, she had never had a family.

But Sasha never gave up. She was strong, always believing in herself and Wonder Woman. She liked to rely on herself and didn't feel as if she ever needed a family.

Sasha worked for the CIA and moved away to help catch a graffiti artist. She finds friends in Vivi, a girl who never seems to wear pants, and Sebastien.

The characters are all relatable and interesting. I really enjoyed this novel, but the ending did leave me hanging a bit.

Also, each chapter begins with a comic strip which flashes back on Sasha's childhood. These flashbacks really made me sympathize with her. I was always excited when a new chapter began so I could see the new comic strip.

This was a short, quick book that was fun to read and kept my attention the whole time. While not being a book with a lot of action, this book still filled me with excitement every time Sasha went out with her friends.

I'm Unreliable, I Know

I'm back again from a very long absence. I'm sorry for being away for so long and I hope to make it up to you all. I had some family problems and then when I sat down to write a post for this blog after a month, I just couldn't do it.
But I'm back now! My life is in vaguely working order and I want to thank everyone who has looked and commented on my blog! I'm going to try to keep up with reviews and such. I already have a new review typed up, ready to release to you all.
Thank you for staying with me all this time and for supporting me. Now I shall help you all in return by introducing you all to some books I'm sure you'll enjoy.
Happy reading everyone! I'll be back to you soon, you can count on it!
(Did anyone else notice my abundance of 'you all'? Heh, it's kinda bothering me.)
